Hygrophila "Brave"

Hygrophila “Brave”, scientific name Hygrophila sp. “Bold”. The prefix “sp.” indicates that this plant is still unidentified. Presumably a variety (natural or artificial) of Hygrophila polysperma. First appeared in home aquariums in the USA in 2006, since 2013 it has become known in Europe.

Many plants show differences in appearance depending on growing conditions, but Hygrophila ‘Courageous’ can be considered one of the most variable species. Forms an upright strong stem with a well-developed root system. The height of the sprout reaches up to 20 cm. The leaves are arranged two per whorl. Leaf blades are long, lanceolate, margins slightly serrated. The surface has a mesh pattern of dark veins. The color of the leaves depends on the light and the mineral composition of the substrate. In moderate light and grown in normal soil, the leaves are olive green. Bright lighting, additional introduction of carbon dioxide and micronutrient-rich aquarium soil give the leaves a reddish-brown or burgundy color. The mesh pattern against such a background becomes barely distinguishable.

The above description applies primarily to the underwater form. The plant can also grow in the air on moist soil. Under these conditions, the color of the leaves has a rich green color. Young shoots have glandular whitish hairs.

The underwater form of Hygrophila “Bold” is often confused with the Tiger Hygrophila due to the similar pattern on the surface of the leaves. The latter can be distinguished by narrower leaves with rounded tips.

Growing is simple. It is enough to plant the plant in the ground and, if necessary, cut it. There are no special requirements for the hydrochemical composition of water, temperature and illumination.
